Omar Mualimm-ak spent a total of five years and eight months in solitary confinement. He had been diagnosed beforehand with bipolar disorder, but his medication was restricted and he deteriorated further, hallucinating and hearing voices.

‘I remember stepping into the cell and it was like stepping over a bridge into another world. The first feeling I had is that something could happen to me in here and no one would ever know.’
