The British Library

If you are studying at University level, then you might want to consider visiting the British Library that receives a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland.

They also host exhibitions and events – many of which are free.

They have newly published the English WordBank – collection of recordings was created between November 2010 and April 2011 as a result of the British Library exhibition, Evolving English: One Language, Many Voices. The exhibition explored the evolution of the English Language over 1,500 years through the Library’s collections and celebrated historic and contemporary diversity by presenting examples of English usage across time and space. The recordings in this collection can be played by anyone, for free.
